A Hilltop View of Entreprenuerialism

The Dingle peninsula is an amazing place. And on the side is a castle that overlooks the village of Ballyheigue below with an unbelievable view of the ocean.

It was built in 1810 and has gone through two huge fires; one in 1840 and another in 1910. These days it is mostly in ruins and serves as the centerpiece of the Ballyheigue Golf Club. What’s left of Ballyheigue Castle has been worked into the game.

It was a genius idea to put something with such historical value to new use in golf. Some would call that entrepreneurialism at its best.

Richard Cantillon who was born in Ballyheigue would be one of them. You see, back in the 1700’s was a known economics theorist who is regarded as the first to define the role of an entrepreneur. He died in 1734 but his theories hold true today. And if you look at what’s left of Ballyheigue Castle you’ll find a plaque there, honoring him. I’m not sure if that’s irony or just a great way to commemorate him.

You can drive up the hill and hike to what’s left of the castle and from the view you can see why it was placed there.
