A Viking's Life

A Viking's Life

When you think of Vikings, of course you think of battles. And there were plenty of them at the Viking Festival in Portadown.

But it is a lot more than that! The Annual Viking Festival in Portadown is a glimpse into Viking lifestyle, reimagined and carried into the future. It’s a family affair. You see kids, teenagers, warriors, wives, crafters, blacksmiths and musicians all part of a community. In some ways it’s a traveling community so they all know each other, who can help with what and they understand why they are all drawn to their heritage.

The Viking life is more than a hobby here. These folks have studied up on their heritage and embrace it. From the village set-up, to the family bonds and from the authenticity of the crafts to the integrity of the dress, the battles and the music.

There is ominous music playing in the background most of the day, setting the stage for the battles that unfolded.

And at night, the music is pretty authentic. I mean I don’t know if Vikings looked like mummies…but these singers sounded authentic and played authentic instruments.
