Keeping Ireland Really, Really Green

Hard Plastic, cardboard, tin cans, plastic bags, even old clothing; when youa re serious about recycling absolutely everything has a place. And my friends Jan and Kevin Lyons, who live just north of Dublin have got this one down to a science. They don't bother to even pay for pick-up at their house, but every three or four weeks they spend an hour of their Saturday, packing up the car and driving through the recycling center a few miles away. It's like a game to keep the actual garbage to nearly nothing. And it's Mother Earth who wins every time.

It began when they lived in Jan's brother's castle not far from town, and it was such bother to get collection to pick up there that the owners, Ken and Lizanne became masters on a mission to recycle everything they could. And the thing is, the recycling center makes it so easy. And this recycling center makes it so easy. They provide a place for everything you can think of.

Even batteries.

And appliances.

And if you really aren't sure....just ask.

And they have this down to a 12 minute trip. It's €3 to get in. And in under 15 minutes they unload the car, already sorted they drop it all off and they are done for another three weeks or so.

It's so much simpler than dumping it all together, paying someone to drive around and pick it up, sort it out and then take it to a recycling center.
