The Friendliest Castle in Connemara

The castle fountain

Built in 1832, the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel in Connemara is not only gorgeous and luxurious, it is filled with fun. It was built by John Darcy as a getaway from Galway and he used it as a home for his minister, building another castle for himself just a bit up the road. Abbeyglen also served as an orphanage during the famine years.

Guests are welcomed by Brian who owns and runs the place, and the history is told by Roger. He’s the concierge, headmaster and resident humorist who tells all who are interested about the history of the area in the bar nightly.

Roger always draws a crowd

While strolling the grounds is amazing, and dinner is great, it’s the party in the bar that makes your stay so memorable. You see, Brian, who welcomed you when you checked in, plays piano and accompanies anyone who wants to share a song or a story with the group at night. not only that, but he often plays til 3 in the morning.

Brian the manager playing piano, my sister-in-law singing.

And he still is up and pouring coffee and making jokes with his guests at breakfast.
