I Found a Leprechaun!!!
My great grandparents hailed from Sligo, a town about two hours drive from Galway. So of course that was one of our first stops once landing on the Emerald Isle. And having been there once before we knew we were headed to Mulaney Brothers. It is the epitome of an Irish Clothier.
They have everything you could need from knick-knacks and touristy trinkets to seriously fine clothing. From hats in every size and woolen weave to shawls and overcoats, fine dresses and an entire department dedicated to picking the wool you want and having a tailor make your jacket to your specifics.
Two years ago Frances and I first stumbled into that store to avoid a rain storm. Just as she was admiring a wall of ties, the wall moved and John Mulaney appeared. He just appeared from behind the ties where it turns out they had a break room and it gave her quite a start.
On this trip we went there looking for him. He is a wonder. Always dressed to the nines and with a wealth of information on the store in his head he can find you anything you might be looking for. And he takes the time to tell you where else to visit in town, what books to read and where you can find a good deal on a great lunch. He has always lived there and that store looks much like I'm sure it did a hundred years ago.
I'd say he's as close as I will probably ever get to a real Leprechaun. He was good luck for us as a friendly sort, a great guide and a fabulous storyteller, all rolled into a pinstriped suit, a thick Irish accent and the best Irish Clothier in Sligo.
