They are breathtaking to see. And the little town of Drogheda, north of Dublin puts on an amazing festival to celebrate their history, their magnificence and their beauty.  The tall ships are a huge draw to Drogheda’s annual Maritime Festival.

 Not only could your go aboard and see how this fleet of seaworthy vessels work, with squared rigging and holds for the crew. The captains are happy to share the stories of the ships, where they’ve been, what they are used for now and how truly impressive they are full sale on the Irish Sea.

 You have to respect the work that’s gone into them, what it takes to keep them in shape and how protective their crews are of each and every one.

And listening to their stories you can imagine what it was like when they sailed cargo regularly around the island.

They even had a swimming race through the harbor among the ships!

And where else would you need to watch out for pirates, raucous crews taking a break on land…and this guy.

 The giant lobster was all over the place!
